Where is Thirukadaiyur Markandeya Kshetra?

Thirukadaiyur in the Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu is renowned for the Sri Amirthaghateswarar Sri Abhirami Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva. This temple is believed to be over two thousand years old and is famous for its architectural beauty and religious significance. Markandeya Rishi was blessed with immortality at Thirukadaiyur.

Being a Markandeya kshetra, Thirukkadaiyur is particularly renowned for its celebration of the 60th Birthday (In Tamil – Shashtiaptha Poorthi), known by other names like Sashtiabdapoorthi or Ugra Ratha Shanti, 80th birthday (Bheema Ratha Shanti) ceremonies, Mrityunjaya Havan and many other Pujas and Homas, which are considered highly auspicious in Hindu culture. Thousands of devotees visit here to perform these ceremonies and seek blessings for longevity and prosperity.

More about Markandeya Rishi

Mrikandu Rishi and his wife Marudmati were blessed by Lord Shiva to have an intelligent son who would live for only 16 years. The boy was named Markandeya.

As Markandeya grew, so did his devotion to Shiva. As advised by his father, Markandeya worshipped the Shiva Lingam at Thirukkadaiyur, even bringing water from the Ganges to the temple. On the day he was destined to die, Yama, the deity of death, appeared with his noose and take Markandeya with him.

Markandeya sought refuge out of fear and embraced the Siva Lingam. Lord Shiva appeared and warned Yama not to touch Markandeya, as he was under his protection. Yama continued and threw the noose, binding Markandeya and the Shiva Lingam together. Angered by Yama’s extraordinary arrogance, Shiva stopped him and held him under his weapon (Trishul), making Yama inactive.

Markandeya was blessed by Shiva to remain sixteen years old eternally. Hence is known as Chiranjeevi.

Shiva came to be known as Kala-Samhara Murthy (one who destroyed both Time and the God of Death) and Mrityunjaya Murthy at this kshetra.
