Connect between “Gunas” in Ayurveda and Diseases:
Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin, the French politician, lawyer and connoisseur wrote in 1826, “Dis-moi ce que tu manges, je te dirai ce que tu es – Tell me what you eat and I will tell you what you are.” In other words, you are what you eat.
But in ancient times this was better understood than in today’s world.
In Srimad Bhagavad Gita, Sri Krishna says that all food is divided into three groups. Sattvic, Rajasic and Tamasic. Wisdom verily arises out of ‘Sattva Guna’, the mode of goodness. Whereas greed and lust are the byproducts of ‘Rajo Guna’, the mode of passion and lethargy. Ignorance is produced by ‘Tamo Guna’.
In chapter 17, Bhagavad Gita has a beautiful Shloka to describe the nature of foods. Foods with Tamasic Guna is mentioned as thus:
यातयामं गतरसं पूति पर्युषितं च यत् |
उच्छिष्टमपि चामेध्यं भोजनं तामसप्रियम् ॥10॥
Transliteration:
” yāta-yāmaṁ gata-rasaṁ pūti paryuṣhitaṁ cha yat uchchhiṣhṭam api chāmedhyaṁ bhojanaṁ tāmasa-priyam “
Translation:
Food which is not properly cooked, lacking in essence, putrid and stale, and even ort and that which is unfit for sacrifice, is dear to one possessed of Tamasic Gunas.
It is time to look at all the recent outbreaks of infections, including the recent ‘Corona’, ‘COVID19’, or ‘NCOVID-19’ outbreak, which has held the world and the mankind at ransom and ask ourselves the cause behind this. NoCov-19 is said to be an outcome of the ‘Tamasic’ or more beastly nature of mankind, which has no regard or respect to the balance of nature. When we indulge in excesses, killing and consuming foods not meant to be or in our food-chain, nature takes an exception to these excesses and stimulates corrective actions.
All viral outbreaks, be it SARS (from pigs), MERS or camel flu (from camels) and now the NCov-19, is thought to have spread from exotic snakes or civet cats.
Mankind should look up to Bhagavid Gita, wherein Chapter 17, verse 8, Sri Krishna says:
आयु:सत्त्वबलारोग्यसुखप्रीतिविवर्धना: |
रस्या: स्निग्धा: स्थिरा हृद्या आहारा: सात्त्विकप्रिया: ॥8॥
Transliteration:
” āyuh-sattva-balārogya-sukha-priti-vivardhanaH rasyaH snigdhaH sthira hridya aharaH sattvika-priyah “
Translation:
Sattvic foods promotes longevity, virtue, strength, health, happiness and joy. They are juicy, smooth, substantial, and nutritious. Persons in the mode of goodness like such foods. Intellectual alertness refers to ‘Sattva’ which means ‘Consciousness’ which is directly linked to power of thinking.
Hence, a vegetarian diet is beneficial for cultivating the qualities of the mode of goodness that are conducive for spiritual life.
Pythagoras has said:
“As long as Man continues to be the ruthless destroyer of lower living beings, he will never know health or peace….”
“O my fellow men, do not defile your bodies with sinful foods…”
There are vegetables that can be cooked and softened over the fire. The earth affords a lavish supply of riches, of innocent foods, and offers you banquets that involve no bloodshed or slaughter; only beasts satisfy their hunger with flesh, and not even all of those, because horses, cattle, and sheep live on grass.
The solution to these epidemics is all in our ancient wisdom.
The obvious conclusion is that those who are spiritually motivated and desire universal wellness, should conscientiously avoid all foods characterized by Rajo Guna and Tamo Guna and resort exclusively to foods that are of Sattva Guna.
