Dhanurmasa Vrat December 16, 2024 To January 13, 2025 | Prayers To Lord Vishnu In The Dawn
PurePrayer presents an insight into the practices and observances during Dhanurmasa Vrat.
The entry of Sun into Dhanur Rashi (Sagittarius), which happens in the middle of December, is denoted as DhanuH Sankramana, a period of special significance and positive energy. It marks the onset of winter. It is also the onset of Uttarayana Punya Kala. Dhanurmasa Vrat is being observed from from December 16, 2024 to January 13, 2025.
During Dhanurmasa Vrat, Pujas are offered to gods in temples and at homes in the early hours of the morning called Brahmi Muhurtam, which is approximately one-and-a-half hours before the actual sunrise, throughout Dhanur Maas. Practice of early rise and offer of libations in the early hours, before sunrise, rejuvenates with positive energy in us and can result in good health.
The Sun moves from one zodiac sign (Rashi) to another and spends a month in each of these twelve zodiac signs: Mesha, Vrishabha, Mithuna, Kataka, Simha, Kanya, Tula, Vrischika, Dhanus, Makara, Kumbha and Meena. This is known as Sankraman of each of these respective Rashis (Zodiac).
How did Dhanurmasa Vrat come to practice?
According to Puranic literature, including Mahabharata, Lord Indra committed the highest sin called Brahma Hatya by killing Vritrasura, who was a committed devotee of Lord Vishnu, as Vritrasura was tormenting the entire universe.
Vritrasura had defeated Indra and usurped his throne and had displaced him from the heaves. Later, Indra was advised by sages to observe Dhanurmasa Vrat to get relieved from the sin and regain the throne. Indra, along with his consort Shacheedei, observed this Vrat for one full month and offered “Mudganna” every day to Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi. At last, he procured the vision and the grace of Lord Vishnu and got relieved from the ill-effects of Brahma Hatya Dosha. Lord Indra was able to kill Vritra and reclaim his throne.
What is Mudganna or Huggi prepared in Dhanurmaas?
People across India offer Mudganna to Lord Vishnu during Dhanurmaas in the early hours of morning, which is considered highly meritorious. Mudganna or ‘Huggi’ is especially prepared with equal quantities of rice and moong dal and offered to the Lord as Naivedya.
Scientifically, consumption of Mudganna or Huggi in the early hours of morning during winter (Dhanus Masa) is very good for our health as the other ingredients of Huggi, namely ginger and pepper, drives away the ill-effects the cold season.
Why we should not miss out Dhanurmaas Vrat?
Dhanurmaas Vrat finds mention in Agni Purana:
|| Yastu dAridrabuddhyA mudgAnnam na nivEdayEt|
| ViShNavE kArmukE prAtaha saptajanmasu nirDhanaha||
“Anyone who, even with a miserly sense, does not offer Mudganna to the Lord in the early hours of morning during Dhanurmasa, shall be impoverished in the next seven lives”.
What are Merits of offering Mudganna?
|| daDhyArdrakam cha mudgAnnam dadyAchChailAguDOjjwalam|
| susuKhOShNam sakandam cha ViShNavE yaH samarpayEt||
|| DruShTwA tachChuBhamudgAnnam santuShTO BhaktavatsalaH |
| dadAti sakalAn BhOgAn mOkSham cha JagadeeshwaraH|
-SmrutimuktAvali
The Lord will be highly impressed if Mudganna is prepared in the manner specified in the Shastras and offered to him in the prescribed manner and he will not only bestow all comforts of life but also salvation in the end through knowledge or realization of ultimate truth.

One day of worship in Dhanurmasa is equal to 1000 years of worship. In the Bhagavatha purana, lord Krishna inculcates the Gopikas to offer Pujas to Goddess Katyayani (Durga) during the Dhanurmasa to obtain Lord Krishna as their husband. Hence, it is also a practice of those seeking marriage to practice Dhanurmaas Vrat.
The following Shlokas have to be chanted during Dhanurmasa Vrat:
|| ವಿಷ್ಣುಪ್ರಿಯ ವ್ಯತೀಪಾತ ಪಿತೃಣಾಮನೃಣಪ್ರದ |
