Where is Kanaka Maha Lakshmi temple?
Kanaka Maha Lakshmi temple dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi situated near the shoreline of Bay of Bengal in the province of Burujupeta in Vishakhapatnam of Andhra Pradesh in India. The temple is located about 4 km from Vishkapatnam Railway Junction and about 17 km from the city centre.
What is the legend of Kanaka Maha Lakshmi temple?
During the Kaliyugam, a Brahmin who was undertaking Kashi Yatra reached the sea-shore of Vishakhapatnam. As it was the time for his afternoon rituals, he came near a well on the sea-shore to perform the rituals. As he finished, he heard a voice asking him to recover the image of Goddess Lakshmi that had been thrown into the well by miscreants. He however ignored the voice. When the voice repeated, he stated his inability to take up the task since he was on a spiritual journey to Kashi. Goddess angrily appeared immediately and took out Parigha (a weapon) in her left hand and was about to punish him.
The frightened Brahmin prayed to Lord Shiva, who appeared and cut of the left arm of the Goddess and saved the Brahmin. He asked the Brahmin to perform the consecration of the image of Lakshmi even if the arm was broken and assured him of Kashi Darshan once the installation and other Pujas were complete.
Brahmin complied with Lord Shiva’s order and reached Kashi in no time.
When was Kanaka Maha Lakshmi temple built?
The history of Kanaka Maha Lakshmi temple or the image has not been established clearly. It is believed that, it is a self-manifest image of Lakshmi. The image is believed to have been consecrated in modern times by Vishakhavarman, a king who founded the Vishakhapatnam fort. As the region was fought for by many kings a number of times, the temple has undergone a lot of changes.
In the year 1912, an effort was made to shift the temple that was in the middle of the street to a corner-place. As a consequence, a plague is believed to have broken out. This forced the people to reconstruct the temple back in its original place.
What is unique about Kanaka Maha Lakshmi temple?
Kanaka Maha Lakshmi temple is without a Vimana or tower above its sanctum sanctorum and open to sky. Many efforts to construct is believed to have failed. You can individually perform the Pujas like Abhishekam with milk, coconut water, curd, ghee and sugar to the image of Goddess Lakshmi. There are many types of Pujas to choose from.
