Vaishakha is a very special month in Indian almanac (Panchangam). Many sacred occasions occur in this month. All the incarnations of Vishnu is very unique and have great significance at all times. The incarnation of Narasimha is the fourth among the ten incarnations (Dashavatara) of Vishnu.
Hiranyakashipu & Hiranyaksh
As the well-known Puranic story goes, Hiranyakashipu was enraged by the death of his brother Hiranyaksha, by Lord Vishnu in the form of Varaha. Hiranyakashipu practiced severe penance and gained a boon from Lord Brahma that he may never be killed by any human nor animal, neither in day nor in night, neither in the sky nor on earth, neither inside the house nor outside. Lord Brahma granted him the boon. Out of arrogance, Hiranyakashipu began to trouble the entire world.
Prahlad’s Words about Lord Narasimha (Vishnu)
As the divine will goes, Hiraranyakashipu begot a pious son called Prahlad, who was initiated into Vishnu’s devotion even in womb, by none other than sage Narada. Hiranyakashipu tried all means to stop and end the devotion of Prahlada, but in vain. He even tried to kill Prahlada by many means. All his efforts failed since Prahlada was protected at all times by Vishnu. As Prahlada, his-self remarks in the Bhagavatha Purana:
“Nobody can bring about the death of anyone without the will of Vishnu, when Vishnu wills, none can escape death.” Prahlada boldly asserted to his father that Vishnu is omni-present. Enraged by this, Hiranyakashipu questioned Prahlada whether Vishnu is existent even in the pillar. As Prahlada asserted, Hiranyakashipu banged his mace on the pillar to disprove Prahlada. However, Vishnu doesn’t disprove his devotees! The omni-present Vishnu appeared from the pillar in the form of Narasimha: human-like body with lion-like face. As Hiranyakashipu attached the lord, the lord took him to dehali (threshold) and tore him apart on his lap. As it was the evening twilight hour, the boon of Lord Brahma was also fulfilled. The form of Narasimha is very unique. It is a combination of human-like form with lion-like face, signifying that the lord will always look benevolent to his devotees and yet destroys all evil without any fear.
Narasimha exceedingly blessed Prahlada and granted him even liberation (Moksha). However, Prahlada was so magnanimous that he denied liberation. The reason he gave was that he was not willing to seek liberation leaving many other deserving souls behind. Thus, he asked the boon to lord that he may guide other souls also in the path of devotion. Lord Narasimha granted him the boon that he will be guiding spiritual soul of the world. Thus, the incarnation of Narasimha is the final annihilation of all evil and also blessing of all immaculate souls like Prahlada.
