Early Life of Sri Raghavendra Swamy
Sri Raghavendra Swamy was born as Sri Venkanna Bhatta (Venkata Natha), the second son of Sri Thimanna Bhatta and Smt. Gopikamba on Thursday, Shukla Saptami of Phalguna month, when the moon was in Mrigashirsha Nakshatra. His birth took place in Bhuvanagiri, a village near Chidambaram in Tamil Nadu. He was a descendant of Sri Veena Krishnacharya of the fame who taught the Emperor #Srikrishnadevaraya of #Vijayanagar dynasty, the nuances of playing Veena.
Venkatanatha lost his father in his early age and was brought up by his elder brother. His initial education was under the tutelage of his brother-in-law, Lakshminarasimhacharya of Madurai. Venkatanatha went to Kumbhakonam, the seat of learning at the time. There he studied Dwaita Vedanta, advanced works on grammar and other Shastras under Sri Sudhindra Teertha.
Sri Sudhindra Teertha impressed with his scholarship in grammar, profound knowledge and rare debating skill called him, “Mahabhashya Venkatanathacharya”.
Name Sri Raghavendra Teertha
Sri Sudhindra Teertha gave the Ashrama nama of Sri Raghavendra Teertha at the time of Ashrama Sweekara (receiving the official staff) meaning, “Who had won the heart of Rama”.
Sri Raghavendra Swamy had titles of Sudha Parimalacharya, Kaliyugavarada among many others. He had a great proficiency in playing Veena and composed many songs with penname of Venu Gopala. “Indu Yenage Govinda” is a very popular composition in #Kannada.
He is perceived as an ‘Avatar’ (incarnation) of a demigod Shankukarna in Vaikuntha at the services of Narayana (Lord Vishnu). Shankukarna was later born as Prahlada, the son of demon king Hiranya Kashyap. That, Prahlad was a great admirer and worshipper of Lord Vishnu who incarnated in Half Lion-Half human form of Lord Narasimha to give salvation to Hiranya Kashyap is another part of Puranas. Sri Raghavendra Swamy during his Vijaya Yatra in the southern parts of India, pointed to the place where Prahlad had Yagyashala (Sacrificial altar). This place was known as ‘Manchale’ during Vijayanagar Empire and became famous as Mantralaya after the ’Brindavan’ of Sri Raghavendra Swamy.
