Shlokam is mentioned in English for a quicker reading:
rOchanO rOchamAnaH, sObhanaH sObhamAnaH kaLyANaH |
shathamAnam bhavathi shathAyuH purushaH shatEndriya AyushyEvEndriyE prathitishtathi ||
Shatamanam Bhavati… taken from Taittireeya states:
“May you be with beauty, charm, glow, virtue, noble thought and generosity! May you have the fullest life of a hundred years with fully functioning senses, body and mind! May you pursue and develop hundreds of noble qualities!”
The aim of Ayurveda, an important knowledge secured by Rishi Bharadwaja from Lord Indra was this. Scriptures state that, a group of Rishis requested Bharadwaja to find a solution to the miseries of humans. He agreed to go on a quest and was successful in understanding Vedas and create the work called, “Knowledge of Life”.
How did Ayurveda develop?
Puranas state that, Brahma created Vedas ordered by Lord Vishnu. He transmitted the knowledge of Vedas to Daksha Prajapati. Daksha transferred this knowledge to Ashvini twins. Ashvini twins presented Ayurveda to Lord Indra. Indra granted this knowledge to Rishis Bharadwaja, Kashyapa and Divodasa. A disciple of Bharadwaja called Agnivesh further simplified the texts of Ayurveda. Charaka, Sushruta and many others brought in further revisions to these great works.
AyuH is the life and Veda is the knowledge. Therefore, Ayurveda can be a comprehensive knowledge of life. Ayurveda is also referred as Panchama Veda or fifth Veda. Ayurveda has long been an integral part of health system in India that is being followed and practiced by the West too.
According to Ayurveda, treatment is based on the panchabhootha concept, the five elements (Pruthvi – earth, App – water, Thejo – fire, Vayu – air, Akasha – ether (space). Considering this concept, the body, food materials as well as medicine is made up of panchamahabhootha in different compositions.

How to understand our body condition?
Ayurveda describes that disorders, illnesses or diseases observed in our body are nothing but a result of Aama or toxins accumulated in our body. Three forces or properties of Vata, Pitta and Kapha are fundamental to Ayurveda. They are also addressed as Doshas.
Vata:
Vata is connected to the wind in our body, which is always mobile and dynamic. Vata regulates the central nervous system.
Pitta:
Pitta is treated as energy, just like the energy we receive from sun directly or indirectly. Pitta governs the digestive system and other biochemical processes.
Kapha:
kapha controls the balance in our body tissue, growth of cells, and the muscular tone.
Prakruti and Vikruti:
Ayurveda describes Prakruti as our body composition and suggests everyone would be having a combination of these three Doshas mentioned. Ayurveda further says that, these energies continuously change in response to our thoughts, actions, food and environmental factors due to Rutus or seasons.
When the dosha become imbalanced, a person’s state becomes what is known as Vikruti.
