Dhanvantari is an Avatar of Lord Vishnu and the King of Varanasi. He appeared during the Samudra Manthan (Great Churn) holding the Amrit Kalash (elixir). He is mentioned as the God of Ayurveda in the Puranas. Dhanvantari is also referred as the Hindu God of Medicine by the great Indian expert of medicine, Sushruta.
