What is Durga Namaskar Puja or Bhagavathi Puja?

Sri Durga Namaskar Puja or worship has been an age old practice prescribed in Shakteya Principle. This is also called Bhagavathi Puja in Southern India.

Goddess Durga or Bhagavathi symbolizes the divine forces (positive energy) known as divine shakti that is used against the negative forces of evil and wickedness. She protects her followers from evil dark negative forces. It is believed that Goddess Durga is the combined form of powers of Goddesses Lakshmi, Kali and Saraswati.

The word Durga literally means “Impassable, Invincible and Unassailable“.

Avatar of Goddess Durga happened due to the combined efforts of Hari, Hara and Brahma as per Puranas. There are plenty of methods prescribed in the Scriptures to please Sri Durga Devi for achieving the desire. A brief description about the form of Durga is mentioned below:

  • Chakra in her hand symbolizes Dharma (duty/righteousness)
  • Conch in her hand symbolizes happiness
  • Sword in her hand symbolizes eradication of vices
  • Bow and arrow in her hand symbolizes character
  • Lotus Flower in her hand symbolizes detachment
  • Club in her hand symbolizes devotion and surrender
  • Trishul in her hand symbolizes courage
  • Abhaya Mudra symbolizes forgiveness and blessings

Durga or Bhagavati is depicted as riding a lion or a tiger. A tiger symbolizes unlimited power. Durga riding a tiger indicates that she is in complete control of the unlimited power and uses it to protect virtue and destroy evil.

The lion is a symbol of uncontrolled animal nature (such as anger, arrogance, selfishness, greed, jealousy, desire to harm others etc.). Durga is depicted riding a lion, reminding us to control these animal instincts in us.

She is usually shown wearing a red sari. Colour Red symbolizes action and the red clothes signify that she destroys evil, protecting mankind from pain and suffering.
