Dhanishtha star is known as Prana Nakshatra. This is called a Prayaschitta Homa.
When the death of a parent happens in Dhanishtha star, it is believed that it can lead to additional deaths among the survivors like the death of spouse, daughter, son or other kin. The procedure involves preparing five bodies using Kusha grass or rice flour and cremate them with the body of the departed. This is followed by Prayaschitta homa either with the 13 days of death or just after 13 day rites.

What is Dhanishtha Vasu Panchaka Shanti?
The Dhanishtha Vasu Panchaka Shanti is an ancient Vedic ritual performed to nullify the malefic effects of certain planetary and cosmic combinations that occur when a person dies during a specific time period. In Vedic astrology, this period falls under the Panchaka Dosha, particularly if the individual dies during the last five days of a particular lunar month. One of the most prominent periods associated with this Dosha is the Dhanishtha Nakshatra (a lunar mansion in Vedic astrology). The Dhanishtha Vasu Panchaka Shanti is a ritual aimed at pacifying the Dosha and ensuring the soul’s smooth transition to the afterlife.
What is Panchak?
Panchak is the combination of the last five constellations – Dhanishta, Shatabhisha, Poorva Bhadrapada, Uttara Bhadrapada, and Revati.
The alignment of these five constellations is considered unlucky. If death takes place in the combination of these constellations, other surviving members of the family could suffer death, according to ‘Muhurta Chintamani.’
Panchak Kaal is described as the five-day time when the moon is in the last two zodiac signs, Aquarius and Pisces, as the 27 Nakshatras are divided into twelve zodiac signs.
Auspicious acts such as marriage, housewarming, Nava Vadhu Pravesh, new construction, Upanayana Sanskar, and Mundan ritual are not performed in the Panchak Kaal, according to Hindu scriptures.
