Importance of Durva

Durva or Doorva grass is considered highly sacred and many Pujakarmas, ceremonies and rituals can be incomplete without their use. Rings are made out of the dried grass and worn at the time of commencing any ceremony symbolising purity. Durva is considered sacred as Lord Brahma is said to reside at its roots, Lord Vishnu in the middle and Lord Shiva at the tip.

Doorva is known by many names in Sanskrit like Bhargavi, Granthi, Shveta and so on. It is called ‘Garike’ in Kannada, ‘Karuka’ in Malayalam and ‘Hariyali’ in Hindi, Marathi and several other languages.

According to Bhavishya Purana, it is mentioned that Durva emerged from Lord Vishnu’s hair while He supported mount Mandhara during the Samudra Manthana. Durva is also referred as Goroma. ‘Go’ indicates ‘mother earth’ and roma means hair. Thus it is considered the hair of Mother Earth. According to Vamana Purana, durva is produced from Vasuki’s tail.

Durva Ganapati Vrat is an important Puja performed on the day of Chaturthi in Shukla Paksha during Shravan Maas.

Dhurva Grass And Ganapati Puja By 88,000 Sages

Ganesha Purana mentions, how Dhurva helped Lord Ganesha overcome the difficulties in assimilating and overcoming a demon called Analasur. 88,000 sages are said to have performed Archana to Lord Ganesha with 21 Durva grass each and then Lord Ganesha was cured of His stomach ailment.

Thus Lord Ganesha is worshipped with 21 Durva Grass on Ganesha Chaturthi day.

Offering Durva grass to Lord Ganesh is said to resolve money related problems and family related problems. Applying Tilak to Lord Vinayak made with Durva grass and fresh milk from cow is said to quicken long pending or unaddressed difficulties.
