Naga Panchami observed on the 5th day after Amavasya or New moon day in the Hindu Panchangam. Naga Pooja is performed in obeisance of the Snake Gods. The idols of serpents are worshipped with fresh milk obtained from Desi cows, flowers, and lighted diyas to receive their blessings for gaining fame, wealth, and knowledge.
What leads to Sarpa Dosh or Naag Dosh?
According to Indian Jyothisha shaastra (astrology), if any of the ancestors (elders) have knowingly or unknowingly harmed a serpent or snake or destroyed their abode while doing agriculture or building a home, it is bound to attract Sarpa Dosha in the Janma Kundali (Birth-Chart) and affect entire family.
Sarpa Dosha might manifest in the form of childlessness; not having children (Santana); children suffering from various ailments in their life and many others.
This is referred to as Sarp Dosh or Naag Dosh in our Kundli.
Naga Panchami | Naga Puja| Sarp Dosh | Dakshina Kannada
Naga Puja and reverence to Nagas by reserving a space called Naga Bana has been an old practice. Dakshina Kannada in Karnataka has many dedicated Nagabanas. Even in Kerala, where once there used to be sacred groves for snakes called Sarpa kavus,
Naga Pujas with Abhishekam is performed seeking the benevolence and blessings of Naga Devatas. People who suffer from Sarp Dosh, those facing delays in getting married and having progeny, young and unmarried girls perform Pooja to the snake gods in temples to get a good husband. Married women, too, worship the snake gods for progeny. Snakes are symbols of fertility.
Importance of Naga Devathas
Snake worship goes back to Vedic Age. A more definite account of this practice is found in the Yajurveda. Prayers to Sarpas are found in Veda Samhitas. Many Hindus in India perform Naga Pooja, Abhishekam and many other rituals honouring the Naga Devathas (Snake as Deity). Naga Devathas form an important part of association with many Hindu Gods. Lord Shiva is adorned with many snakes. Lord Vishnu is generally depicted reclining on a multi hooded Nagaraja Vasuki. Even Ganesha images are shown with a cobra round his waist. Even the Bhagavata Purana talks about how Vasuki and eleven other Nagas form the string of the Sun’s chariot and how each month is associated with one serpent.
